Julie Yang’s Eagle Project – 01/18

On January 18, Julie Yang organized an eagle project at The Almost Eden Garden in Palo Alto. The Almost Eden Garden Project is a non-profit organization that grows organic produce for local organizations that provide meals and services to local low-income residents. Our aim is to create a low-water-use, mostly native plant garden, with a few low-water-use edibles mixed in (artichokes, pomegranate trees). Julie led 13 scouts from Troop 57, 4057 and other Troops to dig holes, place gopher cages in the marked planting areas, plant various plants within the gopher cages, set up an irrigation system involving irrigation drip lines to supply ongoing water for the plants, then they mulched the whole garden and lined the outer edge of the garden with bricks, finally placed signage/labels for all the low-water-use pollinators. It was a successful and meaningful eagle project! Every scout earned conservation hours for Star and Life rank advancements. They helped unhoused and low-income families by participating in The Almost Eden Garden Project. Everybody, including parent volunteers, learned to identify 20-30 low-water-use plants and expanded the knowledge of sustainable gardening. Some scouts also gained their own Eagle Project ideas by working with this Almost Eden Garden Project!
