I hosted Tenderfoot Requirement 3d on August 31 at the Scout House, which covered proper care and handling of knives, saws, and axes. I started by going over knife safeties and how to clean and sharpen them. I had the new scouts demonstrate shaving a few small sticks with the knives. I also showed them how to sharpen an axe. I went over the basic parts of axes and saws, especially bow saws, and then we began the actual demonstrations of both! I had the scouts split into two groups, one was with me to chop firewood with an axe, and the other group was with my helper Chloe Lee, who assisted with the bow saw. Both groups were super successful, and the scouts (and one adult) were thrilled to cut through the pieces of wood! We wrapped up with a rose, thorn, and bud, and then Mr. Cashman gave a quick Scoutmaster Minute. I am honored to be able to host such an exhilarating outing and hopefully, these kinds of outings will also motivate younger scouts to take on leadership roles and positions within scouting!
